The camp of one of the Federal units is spread across the battlefield at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River after the two-day Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. The Union Army, commanded by Ulysses S. Grant, was attacked on April 6 by the Confederate Army, commanded by Gen. G. T. Beauregard. The Confederates were defeated on the second day of what is also called the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing. Casualties on both sides mounted over 23,000. (AP Photo/David Landy)
