Pope John Paul II arrives at the ceremony in Saint Peter's Square from the Basilica Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, during which the Pope bestowed upon the 19th century French nun Saint Therese of Lisieux the title of doctor of the church. One of the Roman Catholic church's highest honors, the Pope bestowed the title on the saint for writings or teachings of outstanding merit. Over the Basilica's main entrance is an image of St. Therese, the youngest doctor of the church, who died in 1897 at the age of 24. (AP Photo/Andrew Medichini)
