Pavlina and Vera now live a happy life together, and enjoy having new adventures. DECIN, CZECH REPUBLIC: DOCTORS told this mum that her critically ill baby wasn't worth saving because she had Down's Syndrome - but she is now a successful child model and national record holder. Full-time mum Pavl?na Mart?nkov? (47), from D???n, Czech Republic, had her daughter V?ra (9) in September 2012 - but the pregnancy wasn't easy. She underwent several tests, where a doctor found an increased risk of Down's Syndrome, a learning disability caused by an extra chromosome. However, Pavl?na decided against undergoing an amniocentesis test, for fear of miscarrying. This test is a way to screen a foetus for potential abnormalities, involving a long needle being inserted into the amniotic sac. However, the procedure can cause complications. As her pregnancy progressed, further ultrasounds showed no sign of Down's Syndrome, and Pavl?na was able to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy - until two weeks before her due date. She stopped feeling the baby's movement, and went straight to the hospital, where she was kept for two days before an emergency Caesarean section was performed. Doctors found that V?ra was born with a diseased heart and very high leukocyte counts. Not only does a high leukocyte count indicate an infection - it could also be a sign of leukaemia. Several hours later, her primary doctor returned to tell Pavl?na that her daughter had been moved to a hospital 15 miles away because she was critically ill. Pavl?na spent six days without her daughter, praying that she would be okay. The second she was able, she visited V?ra. V?ra required weekly blood transfusions - an expensive treatment. Her doctor came to see Pavl?na daily, attempting to convince her to stop V?ra's treatments - claiming that her Down's Syndrome meant she wasn't worth saving. Shocked by the doctors attitude towards her daughter, Pavl?na immediately arranged for a transfer to another hospital. mediadrumworld.com/@p
