EXCLUSIVE: * no uk * The Queen has launched a new ICE CIDER made with apples from orchards on her Royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Her Majesty has started selling 375ml bottles of the niche dessert wine, which is already hugely popular in America and Canada. Ice cider, also known as apple ice wine, is sweeter and more alcoholic than hard cider, and was invented in Quebec 30 years ago. The ?L12 bottles of 11 per cent ice cider and 10.5 per cent black ice cider, which also contains blackcurrants, have been produced using apples from the 30 acres of orchards on the Royal estate. The pressed apple juice is frozen, then slowly thawed. The remaining thick apple syrup is then slowly fermented. Andrew Jarvis, who worked on at the Royal Fruit Farm for 22 years before setting up Sandringham Apple Juice in 2013, said: ??sWe started selling the bottles of ice cider in the summer and it is proving to be very popular. People like to try something a bit different.??? King George VI planted the first apple trees at Sandringham in the 1930s. The orchards were then planted in 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation. Today eight different varieties of apple are grown in the orchard and around 140,000 bottles of Sandringham Apple Juice are produced every year The new ice cider will be available to buy at the Orchard when it is open to the public for apple picking from Saturday (Sept 18) to Sunday, October 3. Sandringham already sells its own Celebration Gin, which is made in a distillery on the estate. The Queen also recently launched her first beer, made using organic Laureate Spring Barley harvested from her gardens at Sandringham and crystal clear water drawn from a nearby bore hole.
