The body of Retsangana Monja lies in a house in the village of Fenoaivo, Commune Ifotaka, on August 30, 2021. - Retsangana Monja, died in June 2021 at the age of 73. His son, Tsihorogne Monja (not in the photo), 45, says : "My father was very hungry. He ate too much raketa (cactus) and tuber bark. That's what killed him, it's as if he had been poisoned. We are obliged to keep his body at home for the moment, because we don't have enough money to buy a zebu and bury him according to Antandroy tradition. A deputy promised that he would donate a zebu to us a month ago, but we are still waiting." Thanks to his work as a coal producer, Retsangana Monja can hope to earn 6,000 Ariary (about 1.5 USD) per week to feed his family, but this is not enough given the increase in the price of NPPs (Basic Necessity Products).
