October, 1907 image of then-President Teddy Roosevelt with the chief of the US Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, on the river steamer 'Mississippi.' This picture was taken on the trip of the Inland Waterways Commission down the Mississippi River. The purpose of this trip was to awaken interest in the development of the nation's inland waterways; more than twenty governors took part in the trip.
