A photo shows Aso Bridge which was broken by the earthquake in 2016 in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture on April 16, 2021, 5 years after the Kumamoto earthquake mainshock, which registered 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. The foreshock occurred the night of April 14, 2016, and the main earthquake followed in the early hours of April 16. It was the first time that tremors measuring 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale had been recorded twice as part of the same seismic sequence. The earthquakes killed 273 people in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, including those who died as a result of quake-related causes and secondary disasters. The new Aso bridge completed this year.
