Volunteers at the Sincedeni Elderly Centre prepare meals with food rescued by Chefs with Compassion in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, on February 17, 2021. - An estimated 16 million people are going to bed hungry each night in South Africa, and with many losing their jobs due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak the number keep rising. Despite this, the country wastes around 30 percent of food produced each year. Johannesburg based non-profit organisation Chefs with Compassion is fighting this sourcing wasted produce and redistributing the so-called rescued food to a network of shelters, soup kitchens and feeding schemes. Chefs with Compassion was founded in 2020 when South Africa was under strict level 5 lockdown due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. It is a collaboration between a network of chefs, kitchens, and beneficiaries to help the needy in Gauteng Province. (Photo by Michele Spatari / AFP)
