Animal rescuers launched a large-scale multi-agency mission to save a fox who was found stranded on an upturned boat in the River Thames. The Shad Thames Residents??? Association had spotted the stricken fox in Saint Saviour???s Dock, Southwark, on Saturday morning (17 October) and alerted the RSPCA. Inspector Rebecca Phillips rushed to the scene along with London Fire Brigade crews and specialist water rescue teams. She said: ??sMembers of the public had seen the fox trapped in the dock on a muddy, rubbish-strewn bank. The poor little fox had been cornered by the river and the tide was coming in. ??sAs the water rose he sought safety on the hull of a small, overturned rowing boat. ??sHe may have fallen over the edge of the dock or he may have jumped down onto the muddy beach when the tide was out in search of food and was scavenging amongst the rubbish when he got stuck. ??sHe climbed onto the hull of the boat to escape the water and firefighters managed to hook the rope for the boat and carefully pulled it over to a scaffolding platform crossing the river underneath a bridge so we could try to catch him.??? As rescuers prepared their equipment and assessed the best way to catch the fox and lift him to safety, the frightened animal panicked and slipped off of the boat and into the water. Rebecca added: ??sThe water was rising quickly and we only had around five minutes until the scaffolding we were standing on would have been underwater and the rescue may not have been safe for us. ??sAs the poor little fox slipped into the water and struggled to swim against the current he was washed underneath the scaffolding and we lost sight of him. I held my breath hoping that he???d re-emerge, I was so worried that we???d lost him.??? Rebecca looked frantically for a minute until she heard scratching underneath her feet and spotted the fox who had hopped onto a scaffolding pole below. ??sI managed to loop my grasper around his body to secure him and get a hand on
