Brooks Laich (brookslaich / 07.07.2019): Me and my new buddy! Its hard to believe that due to habitat destruction and poaching there are roughly only 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world. And they only live right here in the Virunga mountain range that borders Rwanda/Uganda/DRC. Their jungle is increasing being cut down to be used as farmland, and poachers kill them so they can use their giant hands as ashtray ornaments. How disgusting is that? Each day a limited number of permits are issued to be able to trek with them. Each permit costs $1,500 and gets you one hour of observing the gorillas (if you manage to find them). All the proceeds go towards conservation, protection, and purchasing back farmland that was previously jungle, in order to expand their habitat again. I love how @volcanoes.safaris operates with sustainable tourism, allowing a person a short but incredible experience with the gorillas, so we can then share their story, and why they need conservation and protection. These gorillas are beautiful, and peaceful, and deserving of their place in the wild - I hope you get a chance to see them one day!
