View through Georgian banisters to Rouen silk velour patterns ***** This remarkable Fournier street house dates from 1726 which, together with the rest of the street forms one of the most important collections of Georgian houses in Britain. Many a tale has been told of the miraculous survival of such architectural gems, largely because tenants and owners could rarely afford to change or modernise them. Those that survived the London blitz and the depredations of neglect then had to face the developers who were building a world of glass hard up against the old City of London. Fortunately it was through the far-sighted 1970's campaigns of men like art and architectural historian Dan Cruikshank that at least some of the area survived the mayhem.
