Black-and-white potato chip packaging is on display at a Seven-Eleven in Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, northern Japan, on May 29, 2026. Food giant Calbee, Inc. has begun selling its main products, including "Potato Chips," in black-and-white packaging. This change is due to an ongoing shortage of solvents and resins derived from naphtha. This raw material has made procurement of printing ink unstable amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Calbee stated that "stabilizing supply is the top priority" and, for the time being, will reduce the number of colors used in the packaging's printing ink to two.
