TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Lucie PEYTERMANN
Anna Diop stands at the entrance of her home in Mbour, on March 9, 2026. Anna lost six family members including her two sons in 2024 as the pirogue they were travelling in capsized trying to reach Europe through the Atlantic route. She is now helping her son’s wife raise their three years old son.
For children of Senegalese migrants lost at sea, the torment of grief is long-lasting.
Known as "those who remain", the young bereaved are forced to live with the unbearable suspense or impossible grief of knowing a parent has either died or gone missing after their boat disappeared.
The number of such dead, missing and their children is at least in the thousands in Senegal as of recent years. (Photo by PATRICK MEINHARDT / AFP)
