A bald eagle sits calmly in a pine tree as a rocket blasts skyward in the background, creating a perfectly timed alignment captured by Jon Burket in Central Florida. The photographer had spotted the Atlas5 rocket briefly on the horizon before it disappeared behind clouds, forcing him to guess where it would reappear in relation to the bird. When it finally broke through and lined up exactly as planned, the shot came together in a split second moment.
Taken around 60 miles from Cape Canaveral, the eagle remained completely unfazed by the distant launch, while Burket juggled the stress of a potential scrub, drifting clouds and the chance the bird might fly off at any moment. A former TV producer turned wildlife photographer, he now spends hours tracking animals like eagles and bobcats, often going the extra mile to combine them with striking elements like rocket launches to create something that stands out.
