Two European ground squirrels appear to work together over a leafy snack in a meadow in Lower Austria, captured by photographer Perdita Petzl. Rather than fighting over food, one youngster holds the dandelion stem steady while the other nibbles away, creating a surprisingly calm and cooperative scene. The threatened species lives in one of the last large colonies in the region, where Petzl often observes their usually fast-paced and competitive behaviour. Ground squirrels spend the warmer months constantly feeding to build up fat for their long hibernation, and dandelions are a firm favourite on the menu. The moment lasted only seconds, with Petzl capturing the sequence in a blink, making this gentle bit of teamwork all the more unusual among these typically food-obsessed little characters.
