An amateur astrophotographer has come remarkably close to rivaling images from NASA after capturing an incredibly detailed view of the Moon. Ildar Ibatullin took this striking image on March 25 from Kyiv at exactly 7:00 p.m. local time, with the Moon sitting at its first quarter phase. The vivid colours reveal the Moon’s hidden chemical makeup, with blue tones indicating titanium rich regions and reddish hues highlighting areas abundant in iron oxide. While the lunar surface appears grey to the naked eye, Ibatullin processed over 50GB of data by stacking tens of thousands of frames, amplifying subtle mineral differences into a detailed geological map. He selected this composition for its dramatic contrast between the rugged southern highlands and the darker volcanic plains, known as maria. The boundary between light and shadow, known as the terminator, enhances the depth and texture of the crater filled surface, while the darker regions provide the perfect backdrop to showcase the Moon’s mineral diversity. Despite using an older Canon 550D DSLR, Ibatullin overcame technical limitations by capturing the Moon in separate sections using RAW video and photography, later stitching them into a single panorama. Shooting conditions were optimal, with the Moon positioned high above the horizon at around 60 degrees. The processing also revealed intricate lunar ray systems, bright streaks of material ejected from impact craters, stretching across the surface for hundreds of kilometres. The final image offers a rare glimpse into the Moon’s complex geological history, showing it not as a flat grey object, as a dynamic record of billions of years of cosmic impacts and volcanic activity.
