A puffin returns from the sea with a beak crammed full of sand eels on the Isle of May, Scotland, captured by photographer Hari Kumar. The bird pauses for just a moment on the cliff edge, its colourful bill stacked with fish, before heading back to its burrow where a hungry chick is waiting. Taken during the 2025 breeding season, the images show a classic but fleeting behaviour, as puffins work tirelessly through June to feed their young. After hunting at sea, they briefly stop near their burrows, staying alert and scanning for danger before disappearing underground. Kumar, who visits the island each year, waits quietly near puffin burrows to catch these moments, knowing the opportunity only lasts seconds. That short pause, combined with the puffins’ curious nature, offers just enough time to capture one of their most iconic sights.
