AMAZON REGION, ECUADOR - FEBRUARY 22: (EDITOR’S NOTE: Image contains nudity.) Members of the Bameno community, part of the Waorani people of the Ecuadorian Amazon, seen in their traditional clothing as daily life continues deeply connected to their ancestral land and traditions in Amazon Region of Ecuador on February 22, 2025. While the Bamenoans still wear their traditional clothes, the younger generation in particular seems to be wearing more modern clothes. The community members, who prefer extremely simple clothes in harmony with the conditions of the tropical climate, use natural fibers wrapped around the waist for men and skirt-like pieces woven from plant fibers for women. Body paints, bead necklaces and decorations made of bird feathers are among the important cultural elements that express both aesthetic and social identity. Nestled deep within the rainforest, this small group of 145 lives in near-total isolation, surrounded by dense jungle and winding rivers. Despite increasing threats to their environment, they remain committed to preserving their culture, beliefs, and way of life. While many Waorani communities transitioned to settled life following missionary contact, Bameno has maintained its traditional forest-based lifestyle since their last outside contact in the 1970s.
