The stags getting ready to give her a kiss, HELMINGHAM, SUFFOLK, ENGLAND, AN AMOROUS STAG has been captured planting a kiss on the lips of his true love. Images show the red deer stag in full Casanova-mode attempting to woo a female deer at Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, before she sadly rejects his advances and he is left bellowing into the wind. This behaviour is typical of the red deer rut, when stags often guard a harem of hinds, bellowing and showcasing their strength to deter rival stags. The stag’s role during this time is to assert dominance and secure mating rights, but as the images demonstrate, not all attempts are successful. Photographer Phil Orris (37) from Ipswich captured the scene on his Canon R7 and Sigma 150-600mm lens “The red deer stag was bellowing and guarding his harem on hinds, and was doing his very best to persuade the hinds to mate with him, which from the images you can see they were not very receptive to,” he said. “Seeing these impressive animals is always exhilarating, but it’s very important to respect the stags and give them space during this time. “The moment of the stag and hind 'kissing' showed the more tender side to the red deer rut, away from all of the testosterone-filled battles and arguments of the stags."
