A watch gifted to Sir Winston Churchill by fellow British Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith is set to be the centrepiece of Dawsons Fine Jewellery, Watches, and Silver auction on 23 May 2024. Churchill, renowned for his pivotal leadership during World War II, received the timepiece from Asquith much earlier in his career in recognition of him leaving the Conservative Party and joining the Liberals - a huge move. Having begun his career with the Conservative Party, Churchill made waves in 1904 by defecting to the Liberal Party over policy disagreements, notably on tariff reform. The pocket watch was given to Churchill in 1905 by Asquith, then a leading figure in the Liberal party, who himself would go on to become Prime Minister between 1908 and 1916. Churchill’s move aligned him with the progressive wing of the Liberals, marking a turning point in British politics. He would later rejoin the Conservatives in 1924 having grow disillusioned with the Liberals’ sympathy with the rising Labour Party. The inscription on the inner case of the watch reads, ‘To Winston with gratitude H. H. Asquith Xmas 1905,’ symbolising the acknowledgment of Churchill's bold decision. Additionally, the front case proudly displays Churchill's coat of arms, further cementing the significance of this historical artifact.
