Daisy the labradoodle fell ill overnight. When she suddenly stopped eating and started vomiting blood, owner Jenny spent months taking her to the vet and having various tests, but no one could work out how to treat the mysterious chronic digestive illness. Eight months after she fell ill, with Daisy wasting away and in constant pain, Jenny received the devastating news that Daisy would have to be put down, leaving her inconsolable. Her last ditch attempt was to transform Daisy’s doggy diet, providing meat, veggies, homemade bone broth and supplements. Jenny, from Melbourne, Australia, was astounded when it seemed to work, and within a week Daisy started to improve. Jenny believed that highly processed foods may have contributed to Daisy's decline and set out to develop a range of freeze-dried pet treats made from human-grade proteins. She says: ‘I didn’t struggle with preparing her main meals, but taking fresh treats on a walk or to the park is somewhat problematic – imagine fresh lamb hearts in your pocket! So I started researching the best way to produce treats with minimal processing and that led me to freeze drying, which removes the water content but doesn’t cook the proteins so they remain raw.’ ‘It became very apparent to me that dogs & cats are healthier if they’re fed food that is as close to nature as possible and I didn’t see many treat options that were completely natural and human grade.’ Jenny, 54, decided to give up her job in electronics sales and create a business selling the treats she’d sourced for Daisy - and The Paw Grocer was born. Jenny explains: ‘The trends in Animal obesity and its associated diseases like heart disease, cancer, arthritis, & diabetes are following the same as humans and are on the rise. So it’s become a mission for me to help other pet parents understand the benefits of feeding the best quality food/treats they can afford to ensure the longevity of their pet. They’re not with us for nearly long enough, so anything we can do to improve this is a win.’ Featuring: Jenny Richards, Daisy When: 06 May 2024 Credit: Jenny Richards/Cover Images **EDITORIAL USE ONLY.
