A red squirrel rolls itself up to keep warm during the frosty Scottish highlands weather. The squirrel tucked its nose into its arms at it tries to catch some Z’s on a tree branch in Aviemore, Scotland. Photographer Brian Matthews said, “These squirrels are very used to people and will come in close for hazelnuts. Usually, they will sleep in their drey (nest) but they do like to take a nap when they’ve been busy!” “It’s always nice to see wild animals behaving very normally with you around, this squirrel was relaxed enough to nap right in front of us, knowing it was safe. Though you do need to be careful just napping on a branch in the open, a Goshawk could come down and grab you!” “They tuck their heads in to keep their noses warm, the only bit without a good covering of fur.” Please byline: Brian Matthews/Solent News © Brian Matthews/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** It’s going to sleep on the branch. When and where were the photos taken? Scotland near Aviemore in the highlands How did you capture the shots and were there any difficulties in getting the shots? Same location, same squirrel, these squirrels are very used to people and will come in to hazelnuts (their favourites) the squirrels coming down the tree are taken with a wide angle so came very close. Is it usual sleeping behaviour for the Red Squirrel to curl up in a ball like this, if you know? I’ve never seen it before but it has been recorded, usually they will sleep in there drey (nest) but they do like to take a nap when they’ve been busy!! What is your favourite thing about the shots? It’s always nice to see wild animals behaving very normally with you around, this squirrel was relaxed enough to nap right in front of us, knowing it was safe. Though you do need to be careful just napping on a branch in the open, a Goshawk could come down and grab you! Is there anything further you think we should know about the shots to help us caption them? They tuck their heads in to keep their noses warm, the only bit without a good covering of fur. Finally, has any of your biographical details changed? Same
