Donbok Buam, a native of Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, stands in a sacred forest, a sparsely populated mountainous region of Meghalaya, a state in northeastern India, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023. Buam still practices the Indigenous faith and is trying to promote ecotourism in the region. In his village's sacred forest, he says, rituals are performed at the confluence of three rivers honoring the goddess Lechki, denizen of the forest and guardian of the village. (AP Photo/Anupam Nath)
