Flocks of seagulls swarm small fishing boats like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's, The Birds. These colonies of Heuglin's gulls can be observed almost every morning on the Yamuna River bank in Delhi, India. Travel photographer, Raghav Rai Ralhan, 28 said, ÒEvery morning at sunrise these birds can be seen flying around and circling the boats for food.Ó ÒThey migrate only in winters from Siberia to a warmer climate in the Indian subcontinent. Very interestingly these birds seem to have developed a taste for Indian snacks. One in particular, called Sev, a deep fried snack made of gram flour.Ó ÒThey instantly recognise the boats and start circling the boats for food. What species of bird is this? Are they common here? : These are Siberian seagulls. They migrate only in winters from Siberia to a warmer climate in the Indian subcontinent. Can you describe what is happening in these images? : Every morning at sunrise these birds can be seen flying around and circling the boats for food. Why are the birds swarming? Is there fish on the boats? : Very interestingly coming to India have made these birds develop a taste for Indian snacks. One in particular which is called Sev a deep fried snack made of gram flour. Can you give us an insight into the moments leading up to this as well as directly after? : these birds are so familiar with the snack and the boats men there that they instantly recognise them and start circling the boats for food. Once that is done and they are well fed they spend some time sitting calmly on the river taking a bit of sun. How were you able to capture these images? ItÕs not an easy task to wake up in Delhi winters with dense fog and drive up to the river bank but these once in a year visuals acts as a big motivation. You just have to be there before sunrise and wait for the birds to wake up as well.
