Outrigger, made from Japanese cedar (cryptomeria) from Kyushu. This is a recent addition for stability. Originally sabani did not have an outrigger but were far less stable. Sabani boats came into being after Sai On, advisor to the Ryukyuan King Sho Kei, forbade felling trees to make dugouts in the 18th century, so few trees with a large girth were left. Now sabani are made from Japanese cedar shipped down to Ryukyu from Kyushu. Their clean lines conceal how traditional Sabani boats were born out of necessity and nascent environmental concerns centuries ago. In the early 18th century, advisor to the King of Ryukyu, Sai On, crafted one of the most impactful forest-conservation plans still referenced today in Japan and the United States. Part of that plan forbade construction of âkuribuneâ (dug-out) canoes, ubiquitous among fishermen, to protect trees of large girth in 1737.
