Bull shark happy with its treats SOUTH FLORIDA EXCITING images of a bull shark being hand-fed by a free driver were recently captured off the South Florida coast. In these pictures, Captain John Moore and dive guide Jordan Lempke of Florida Shark Diving can be seen giving the bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) ‘treats’ to keep them interested while conducting a shark diving tour for photographers. During the dive, the group was surrounded by five female bull sharks who came looking for their tasty treats. Most of them were young adults, ages ten and above, but two were more mature, above the age of 15. These images were taken by a 56-year-old wildlife photographer, Steve Hinczynski, using a Canon R5 camera with an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III lens in a Nautica housing with an 8-inch dome. He also used two Ikelite DS125 strobes to provide underwater lighting. “During the dive, most of the time, the sharks seemed to be on a conveyor belt,” he said. “They came up looking for a “shark treat” piece of bait, grabbed one if it was available, then circled back down, disappearing to deeper depths, then came back looking for another treat. “Occasionally, I’ll end up in the middle of a group of sharks, which made things a little tricky trying to watch them all and make sure everyone was behaving. “The sharks were continuously moving. Most of the time, they kept some space between themselves and me, but there were times when either my camera was getting rubbed or I needed to remind the shark about personal space and guide them along. “Being this close to the sharks is about being accepted and trusted by another creature. The sharks would not let you get this close if they didn’t trust you. If you do something they don’t like, they disappear.” ENDS
