A loggerhead sea turtle goes back to the sea after laying eggs at Yaku-shima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture on May 25, 2023. The island is one of the biggest spawning grounds for loggerhead turtles. It is said that one-third of the turtles in North Pacific were born on the island. However, the decrease in spawning grounds due to coastal protection works, catch, marine pollution, and hunting as food have reduced the population. The turtles are somehow being protected through the efforts of many people, including local residents, NPOs, and volunteers. ( The Yomiuri Shimbun via AP Images )
