Mamadou Samb and a colleague carry a board down to the waters edge that he uses as a buoy and support wile going diving in Dakar on March 20, 2023. - In recent years it as not become uncommon for him to go out multiple times a day and not find any fish. He says a result of larger industrial fishing boats coming close to shore to fish in shallower waters and climate change as meant it has become harder to make a living.
Fish is a staple of Dakar, the coastal capital of Senegal. Many fisherman have experienced fish stocks plummeting over the last few years as international fishing boats come close to shore where artisanal fishermen work, combined with warmer waters, finding an abundance of fish close to shore is never guaranteed and many fishermen can spend hours hunting with no success.
