Mandatory Credit: Photo by Quirky China News / Rex Features ( 1147556b ) Man builds home-made elevator at home in Houma, Shanxi province, China - 16 Mar 2010 MAN BUILDS HOME-MADE ELEVATOR In order to make life a little easier for himself a pensioner has built a home-made elevator on the side of his house. The shabby looking elevator, which is made out of steel pipes and iron pieces, can be found outside a two-story building in Houma, Shanxi province . The contraption was created by Zhou Yonglin, who owns the building and lives on the second floor above a shop. Before he constructed the elevator, which is around 1m wide and 2m high, Yonglin had to walk through the shop each time he wanted to get in or out of his flat. The shop owner commented: "Since the stairs is within the shop his family used to walk through our shop all the time" Yonglin, 62, a retired auto repair shop worker, said he felt bad walking through the basement shop dozens of times a day so came up with the idea of making the elevator. The finished device can move up or down at the push of a button, with a lorry tyre installed on the bottom to act as a cushion as it descends. Yonglin designed the elevator himself and it took nearly a year to make. "It's very convenient. My family have used it for more than a year and never had any problems," he said. However, the local Special Equipment Inspection office said the family should get an official certificate before using the home-made elevator. "We don't suggest the family to continue using the elevator," said Cui Yusong, the director of the office. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Quirky China News / Rex Features ( 1147547i ) Construction worker impaled on three metal bars after tripping, Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China - 16 Mar 2010 CONSTRUCTION WORKER IMPALED ON METAL BARS A construction worker became impaled on three metal bars after falling of scaffolding on a building site in China. Zhang, 30, was working on a construction project in Nanjing in eastern China's Jiangsu province when the accident occurred. He was installing decoration boards on the second floor when a co-worker asked him for help with another task. While walking to the other side on the scaffolding, Zhang tripped and fell onto a cluster of protruding steel bars, which pierced his body and held him in mid-air. "When we came down Zhang was still sliding down and the bar was piercing deeper into his body. It's very bloody," said a co-worker. Two steel bars pierced through Zhang's left and right thighs respectively and another bar pierced his left buttock. Workers held Zhang steady and used cutting machines to cut the 1.5 cm diameter bars. Doctors in Mingji Hospital said Zhang was fortunate that the bars didn't pierce the main arteries in his legs. He is now recovering in the ICU ward and his condition is described as stable.
